Upcoming London in-person seminar

While some predicted the death of Religion, in our “global” world freedom of religion and conscience has become central. People are moving, settling, and traveling to all parts of the planet. Refugees add a humanitarian dimension to the challenge of shifting cultures. A Buddhist or Sikh may be persecuted in Paris or London. A Christian or Muslim can find it difficult to worship in other parts of the world. A Jewish believer or Bàha’i may be discriminated for their beliefs almost anywhere.

Freedom of Religion and Conscience thus requires immediate and constant attention. As a right it is inscribed in most constitutions, yet the reality is often complicated: what of the right to proselyte? Or the freedom to change religion? Is religion an aspect of personal life or can it be freely expressed in the public sphere? These are some of the questions that will be discussed during the Euroseminar at the BYU London Center January 4th to 7th , 2023.

The Seminar will offer three panels of highly qualified presenters: Panel 1: Legal Dimensions of Freedom of Religion; Panel 2: Cultural and Social Aspects of Freedom of Religion; and Panel 3: Interfaith Dialogue and Freedom of Religion.

This fifth in-person session of the EuroSeminar (previously in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2022) will give young European Latter-day Saint professionals and scholars a rigorous but intimate setting to consider implications of their own faith. We invite intellectually active Latter-day Saint young people from across Europe and from all backgrounds to apply: a spiring scholars, professionals, and students (graduate and undergraduate). The highly interactive setting will involve close discussion with senior scholars and professionals from Europe and the United States. It will appeal to those who desire to work with fellow Latter-day Saints on a sustained basis to engage the increasingly complex world around them. English-language fluency and readiness to read sophisticated preparatory material are required.

The seminar will be held 4th to 7th of January 2023, at the Brigham Young University London Centre. Housing and meals will be provided at no cost to seminar participants. Limited funds are available to partially reimburse travel costs to and from London. Those seeking such assistance will have the opportunity to mention this in their application. Financial assistance for visa applications is not available.

The application deadline is Tuesday, 20 December 2022. We welcome applications from all countries in the Europe North and Europe Central Areas. To apply, please use the form below.
